How Does A Pro Athlete Focus?

YOUNG ATHLETE FOCUS vs PRO ATHLETE FOCUS

How does a pro athlete focus? From little league to high school to college to pro sports there is a degree of focus you must have to perform. Physical strength and speed improve as you move up levels, but does your ability to focus improve? The reason many physically gifted athletes don’t live up to their ‘expectations’ is their inability to maintain a high level of focus, consistently.

Highest visual acuity is captured on the back of the eye, called the fovea.

WHAT DOES A PRO ATHLETE FOCUS?

How does a pro athlete see things? Let’s define what focus is. Focus is the ability to capture the most relevant visual stimuli in order to make a successful athletic movement or decision. MORE IMPORTANTLY, it is the ability to IGNORE IRRELEVANT STIMULI. Let’s break that down. When you are ‘in the zone’ or playing well, what is going through your mind? Most every athlete says, “nothing” or that “I just see and react”. Ask that same athlete when they are playing poorly what is going through their mind and they will say, “everything” or start listing things like “mechanics”, “self doubt”, “ref/ump made a bad call”, “still thinking about the mistake I made earlier”, etc. Physically, that athlete is the same when they were performing well and when they are performing poorly. Poor focus, or the inability to ignore those distractions is why they perform poorly.

HOW CAN WE IMPROVE OUR FOCUS?

How can we improve our focus and maintain it from play to play? We are only as good as the info our brain processes. When we capture the ‘filet mignon’, or the most relevant info, our brain can move us successfully and more quickly. We have better reaction time. When we allow the brain to also process irrelevant info, the ‘greasy chili bacon cheeseburger’, it dilutes the good info and 2 things happen. One, it takes longer to process the extra info and our reaction time suffers. Two, we perform successfully less consistently due to the dilution of the good info. When the brain gets late info or incomplete info or incorrect info it becomes difficult to perform successfully consistently.

Strobe Sport Glasses

STROBE SPORT TRAINING GLASSES IMPROVE FOCUS

Strobe Sport Training Glasses https://strobesport.com/store/ will improve focus and reaction time. Wearing the glasses when you practice drills puts resistance on the brain. When the lenses are clear the brain must capture and process the visual info faster before the lenses go opaque. The longer time of occlusion (opaqueness) the more info the glasses takes away and makes the brain work faster. Take the glasses off and everything seems slower. When you speed up your brain the game slows down. The other benefit is better focus. When the lenses are clear the brain must be more picky about the info it captures. It learns to ignore the irrelevant info. It more consistently learns to capture the ‘filet mignon’. The brain is naturally lazy so the Strobe Sport glasses makes the brain work faster and more efficiently.

TRAIN LIKE A PRO ATHLETE

In closing, the pro athlete sees things and processes them super fast. They consistently capture the ‘filet mignon’ and ignore the irrelevant info. When your focus is that good you perform with a ‘quiet’ body and ‘quiet’ mind. Performance anxiety is reduced. That’s why pro athletes seem so calm when the game is at its craziest.
